Hapkido and Children’s Classes Training Fees
We are a non-profit, non-religious and non political amateur sports club. All of our instructors give their time voluntarily and are not paid. Fees are charged to cover the hire of facilities and other costs associated with running our classes. Any surpluses are re-invested back into the Academy.
When you first join the academy you can pay for your first month’s training by electronic payment, cash or cheque at the relevant fee at its lower tier rate. Thereafter the appropriate fee is charged
monthly in advance depending upon which payment method you choose to use.
Fees are payable
all year round because we
operate all year round regardless if people decide to attend classes or not. We have factored in family holidays, etc. in setting our fees and we have discounted the regular year-round payments accordingly. In some situations where people cannot attend training for a genuine reason (such as an injury) we will suspend your payments until you can return to training.
We operate a
two tier fee structure. The lower fee structure is for
regular year-round electronic payments (e.g. Automatic Payment, Internet Banking or EFTPOS). The higher fee structure is for students who regularly break their regular payments by the electronic methods or who pay by
cash or cheque (higher fees are charged for casual electronic payments, cash or cheque payments to cover the extra costs and time involved in handling these payment methods).

A
Family Discount applies to members who are part of an immediate family who are all living together and to be eligible for the discount, the other family members need to be
non-income earners – e.g. dependent children or a home keeper. The
Family Discount is 100% of the highest applicable fee plus a 50% discount on the relevant class fee per second and subsequent eligible family member thereafter.
A
Personal Key may be issued at our discretion to regularly paying members to allow them to do their own personal training outside of scheduled classes.
Self Defence and Specialist Courses
The cost for this varies depending on the duration of the course and number of students taking part. A 6 lesson basic self defence course will typically cost $90 per student. If you have an immediate family member enrolled in one the Academy’s regular classes, then a 1/3rd discount also applies to the course fee (e.g. a $90 course is charged at $60 unless you are paying by cash or cheque where the fee will be $70).
If you are interested in taking part in a Self Defence course please complete the on-line booking form and once we have enough students pre-enrolled we will commence the course.
Grading Fees
These start at $30 for a promotion test from white belt to yellow belt, increasing to $40 for all the blue belt grades and to $50 for the red belt grades. Black Belt promotion tests start at $250.
Children are not charged grading fees until they progress to the Regular Class. They may earn merit badges for developing various skills. These cost $5 each.

Uniforms

Beginners and Self Defence students may wear loose casual clothing (e.g. tasteful T shirt, loose pants). A white martial arts uniform must be worn by regular members if they want to progress past White Belt. These can be obtained through the club or at normal retail rates direct from a martial arts supplier.
Our recommended uniform is the standard heavy Judo style uniform which normally retails for approximately $120. We can obtain the same uniform for Academy members for $75. Lighter weight children’s karate uniforms can be brought for $50 through the club. We recommend these for our younger students.
Uniform patches are also strongly recommended. The patches are available to all students at cost ($40 a set).
We also have an alternative training top for use in the warmer weather or for “no jacket” self defence or grappling training. This is a black “rash guard” with club branding and costs $60.
Other Equipment
Other than a uniform, no other clothing or equipment is required unless you have a child in the Saturday Junior Sword class which requires a foam “sword” which we can obtain for you at cost.
Testimonials
Women in Hapkido
|
Hapkido does not require strength or size to be effective, which makes it particularly attractive to women. It’s more fun than the gym, but offers plenty of aerobic and conditioning work to keep fit while learning lots of practical self-defence techniques that are effective in the real world. It does not take long to build up self-confidence and a sense of empowerment, learning at self-set pace in a supportive environment.
The Upper Hutt academy is clean and well maintained. When on the mat everyone is treated with respect, irrespective of size, age, strength or gender. There is choice in what’s learnt, so nobody is forced to master techniques with which they are uncomfortable. However, women are offered additional techniques to deal with unpleasant advances and attacks that they may suffer.

Children in Martial Arts
|
Kōtuku has been attending Hapkido for the last 2 ½ years and really enjoys it.
It has been great to see the progress Kōtuku has made over the two years working with Callum.
Callum is a great instructor and works well with the children.
He incorporates age appropriate and fun games into the training whilst maintaining good control of the class.
He is aware what each child developmentally is capable of, and works within each child’s limit and character,
whilst pushing them to achieve to their highest level.
Another plus side is that Callum splits the different levels up within the class,
which means that your child keeps learning and processing at their level, often there are two or three instructors
in the same class working with each group which speeds up their individual learning.
This year they have developed a badge system for different kicks, etc which has really encouraged the younger ones to keep motivated and
working towards achieving their goals.
Callum makes sure each child is ready before he grades them which ensures success and builds confidence,
he also allows them to choose which badge they will work towards, thus promoting automony.
Callum is very approachable and open to any ideas from parents and will also work with any problem your child may be having,
for instance rough play in playground. I have seen a real confidence in my daughter since she started
hapkido in being able to stand up for herself both physically and verbally and would throughly recommend any child
doing the self defence with Callum and his staff, all of whom are equally competent and work well with the children.
