Hapkido

Classes in Hapkido are the main classes offered by our academy and are the most effective way to learn life long self defence skills.

Hapkido training is focused on helping its students develop effective self defence skills while also gaining from the various benefits that traditional martial arts training offers (improved fitness, health, self confidence, etc.). Hapkido can be learnt by anybody in reasonable physical condition aged from about 12 onwards although we do not award 1st degree black belts to anybody under 15.

A typical weekday class focuses on our syllabus training and consists of a warm-up followed by fitness drills and basic martial arts drills. This can be quite intensive, so new students are advised to just do what they can. The class is then normally broken up into various grades at this point with instructors providing guidance where appropriate. Then we move to some sparring (controlled fighting) followed by self defence drills where each person faces attacks that they have been taught to deal with from other members of the class in a controlled situation. Often we do self defence scenario drills like facing attacks from multiple assailants and applying self defence techniques in different situations, e.g. blindfolded to simulate being attacked in the dark. At the end of every class we do some stretching and relaxation exercise as warm down.

A typical weekend class focuses more on aspects of our syllabus that need to be further worked on so the class structure is less formal and not syllabus focused. We allow all members (adults and children) to attend weekend classes (this allows members of family groups to train together) hence their “Open Hapkido” name.

You can train in Hapkido in any of the scheduled classes and our membership options give you the choice to train either twice a week or more than twice a week.

Childrens Hapkido

We offer Children's Hapkido for those aged between 6 and 11. Our Children's Hapkido classes are based on our Hapkido syllabus. However all of the joint locking and weapons techniques that we teach in Hapkido have been removed. Instead Children’s training focuses on kicks, simple throws and Hapkido self defence techniques modified to suit younger people.

The Children's Martial Arts classes are structured for various age groups and are a great way to help Children get physically active, develop physical skills, gain self confidence and to learn some basic self defence skills.

We find that most Children are ready to progress to the mainstream Hapkido classes when they are about 12 years old.

Our Children’s Hapkido Classes have proven to be very popular and in order to maintain our high standard of personal coaching with existing students and to allow more children to join, we run two children’s classes on Mondays. The first class starts at 4.30 PM and is aimed at younger children, ages 5 to 7 and is 30 minutes long. The second class starts at about 5.10 PM and is aimed at the older children, ages 8 plus. Note that you cannot do both the Monday Children’s Martial Art’s classes.

The Thursday Children’s Hapkido Class is aimed more for the 10 to 12 year olds to help them transition into the mainstream Hapkido classes. Younger children are welcome and they train separately from the older children.

Junior Sword

We also offer some basic training in basic “Kumdo” - Korean sword fighting for junior members (12 and under) We offer Kumdo training on Saturday mornings, immediately after the Open Hapkido class. We have found that this is a very popular activity and basic techniques and drills are taught before any sparring is introduced. This is also performed with a foam sword.

The class is run concurrently with the first part Order of the Boar’s Medieval Sword Class (which is held at our facility on Saturdays from 11 am to 1 pm) and students may progress to this class to further their study of swords and other weapons once they are ready to do so.

Self-Defence and Specialist Classes

These courses depend on both student demand and instructor availability. Unless advised otherwise, classes are approximately 1 hour long. We are very flexible on the type of classes or courses that we can offer, with our most popular classes including:
  • Basic Self Defence.
  • Self Defence for the Elderly
  • Self Defence for Women.
  • Control and Restraint Techniques Course (suitable for doormen, ambulance officers, security guards, police, etc.).
These courses will not make people skilled self-defence practitioners (only regular Hapkido training and progression through the Hapkido syllabus will achieve this) and is therefore only intended to provide a basic level of competency and self-confidence in dealing with low to mild levels of aggression in a self defence situation.

Courses are held subject to demand and instructor availability. In order for us to schedule a course we need at least 6 students pre-enrolled and a course typically last 4 – 6 hours depending upon the requirements of the group. A course can be held either as a series of 1 hour classes or as a block course.

Seminars

We occasionally run and host seminars with other Hapkido clubs and other Martial Arts groups. These are usually held on Sunday afternoons.
